‘Veilig Huis Vinkie’ makes homeowners aware of energy safety.

Veiligheidsregio Landelijk

To draw attention to the safety risks of the energy transition, we introduced ‘Veilig Huis Vinkie’: a mascot that helps homeowners to safely handle solar panels, charging stations, insulation materials , home batteries and e-bikes. We developed our own landing page for each sub-topic, with multiple videos, a handy comparison tool, tick lists, an interactive video quiz for young people and more!

How do you identify the many safety risks of sustainable initiatives?

The energy transition has many advantages, but also brings with it some challenges. For example, consider the safety risks in and around your home: solar panels, a home battery, a charging station for your electric car, using, charging and maintaining your e-bike, or insulating and heating your home. The Fire Department and Safety Regions are making a pitch to draw attention to and address these risks through effective public information. Homeowners often assume that installers and experts know what they are doing, but practice sometimes turns out to be different.

Be safe with Veilig Huis Vinkie!

The safety risks in and around your home concern all homeowners in the Netherlands. That’s why it was important to keep the tone of voice as clear and simple as possible. In addition, the fire safety of your home is of course a serious subject. So we started looking for a way to address the risks seriously and urgently. But without pointing fingers and with a light-hearted edge. This is how we came up with the idea of introducing a 3D animated mascot, which gradually introduces the target group to the safety risks. Safe House Vinkie became the charming and somewhat cheeky house finch who points out the safety risks of the energy transition to homeowners. With the help of CGI (Computer-generated imagery), we developed the 3D animated check mark and integrated it into the photo and video expressions of the campaign. The concept includes simple ‘tick lists’ for homeowners, so they can check for themselves what they need to pay attention to when safely using, charging and maintaining electrical appliances. Veilig Huis Vinkie also offers various check lists for the installation of, for example, charging stations, solar panels and home batteries. Each electrical appliance or part in the home became a separate sub-project within the campaign. For example, we periodically informed the homeowners of a new tick list, including a web page with an explainer video and textual explanation. This way you stay alert and check yourself safely!

Together for a safe energy transition.

The impact of the project is significant. Each sub-project had its own landing page on the central website of the Fire Department. Each with a toolkit for safety regions and including advertisements, flyers, social posts and videos. A webinar for communications officers from the security regions attracted more than 100 registrations, indicating strong regional involvement and a successful national rollout of the campaign.
